The Start

Italia!

This blog was created for future and past trips to Italy.

On previous visits we haven't been solely to Italy and it has been part of a longer trip incorporating more countries.

Some of the previous trips have been lost when other sites decided to go bust. I have rescued what I could.

Agritourist Campania

Casale Antonietta

Once again. A blog rescued from a defunct site.

Casale Antonietta

We had a week's holiday and we thought that a trip to Italy would fill the spot. I checked online and found an agritourist hotel called Casale Antonietta, It's situated just a few miles from Sorrento.

So we flew to Naples and picked up the car. I had booked a Fiat Panda or similar, but they generously upgraded us to a Grande Punto for free.

We got to about a mile or so from Antonietta when it all went a bit wrong. Okay not actually wrong, but the Garmin couldn't find the road we needed. In the end we took a narrow road up the hillside and at one point had to turn the door mirrors in. It was that narrow. That actually proved right!

The site has a main building with rooms and others around the site. Our ensuite room looked like a converted stable or outbuilding.

When you come out of the site turning left looks like a continuation of the narrow road. This illusion is swiftly ended with the steps. No barrier! No Railings, but road to twenty steps. Imagine driving down there....

We walked down and got the bus into Sorrento.

Paestum Day

Of course, Naples is most famous for Vesuvius and the towns that were covered in volcanic ash back in AD79 - Pompeii and Herculaneum. Of course we were going to go, but we decided that at first we'd go further field to the Paestum.

Paestum was a major ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Magna Graecia. The ruins of Paestum are famous for their three ancient Greek temples in the Doric order, dating from about 600 to 450 BC, which are in a very good state of preservation.

We chose to avoid the Amalfi Coast Drive this time as we wanted to get there...... This meant a stop above Vietri sul Mare at the eastern end of the Amalfi coast.

On the way we stopped for lunch as a local restaurant. Massive cheese and tomato pizzas for €2 each! Just across the road was a field of buffaloes that supply the milk for the cheese....

Arriving at Paestum we parked up and paid to get in. The site is spread over a wide area and it was hot!

The temples are marvellous. We drove back through along the Drive! Madness. Even late in the afternoon is was nightmare.

We stopped in Positano.

Just a short shop. We'd be back to take in the Drive from west to east another day.

Vesuvius

A short day drive to Vesuvius. The plan was actually to "do" Vesuvius and Pompeii together. Nope! By the time we had driven to the foot of Vesuvius and parked and then walked to the top. A long dusty walk!

With Vesuvius expected to go pop at any moment there is always a frisson of excitement. What smoke we did see could have been a bloke sitting behind a rock blowing cigarette smoke up in the air!

Pompeii Day

We decided to let the train take the strain. Pompeii ruins have a station right opposite the gates. The train from Sorrento took about 35 minutes with plenty of stops.

The End

I was able to recreate some of this trip using Flickr to help me as after 11 years memories are fragile.
